Our classroom is moving to Woodstock's Little Theatre at 54 River Street for the 2019-2020 school year. This central location will afford us many opportunities to explore Woodstock. As in the past, our classroom environment will be simple and homey, giving our children a prime space to comfortably explore and play. We'll post photos of our new set-up later this fall! Interested in taking a tour in the fall? Please reach out!
At WNS, we encourage independent thinking and problem solving to help children gain respect and confidence in themselves. Social and emotional development are key components of WNS daily practices. This includes positive reinforcement and inspiration to use language and strategies for sharing.
WNS provides opportunities involving creativity, exploration and discovery. Exposure to music, dance, yoga and mindfulness is embedded in the weekly schedule. We also take frequent excursions to the town library, Faulkner Park, Vail Field and Mount Peg. Local children's yoga teacher Angel Rubino makes periodic visits, as does a teacher from the Music Together program.
A Typical Day at WNS
When the children arrive in the morning, they first place their backpacks and lunches in their cubby before choosing from one of several activities for open free play. We then gather for our morning meeting, which always includes time for moving our bodies and getting excited for the day. After snack, we head outside; we dress for the weather and find fun even when it's a little chilly or wet. We often visit Vail Field, the library, or walk to the Village Green. We come back in for another activity inside before eating lunch and enjoying a story.
The preschool portion of our day ends and some students leave at 1:00; those who remain enjoy a nap/quiet time with books to recharge. Our afternoons include another snack time and a second dose of time outside. Our extended care wraps up at 4:00PM. It's been another full day at WNS!
Meet Our Teachers
Director + Head Teacher
Kelsey thoroughly enjoys the role as Director and Head Teacher of the Woodstock Nursery School. She received her bachelor’s degree from Colby-Sawyer College in Early Childhood Development and is certified to teach nursery through third grade. After graduation she lived in Southern California, before teaching at Sharon Elementary and directing the After School Program at the Woodstock Elementary School. Kelsey spent three summers as the Summer Camp Director at ArtisTree Community Arts Center. She took the helm of WNS at the start of the 2017-2018 school year.
Her passions include the outdoors, arts, mindfulness and yoga, which are intertwined with her teaching philosophy. In her spare time, she enjoys snowboarding and taking hikes with her dog, Pannikin. She makes trips down to her hometown in Massachusetts to soak in the ocean water as much as possible!
Doria is a Woodstock native who raised children here and is grateful to have grandchildren in town now too. She's been involved with young children and education most of her life, working in Woodstock and Pomfret schools, full-time, and the Upper Valley Waldorf Early Childhood program for several years as an assistant part-time. A life-long learner, Doria acquired her bachelor's degree through studies at University of Vermont, University of Nevada and Norwich University before earning her Elementary Education teaching license from Upper Valley Teacher’s Institute. She obtained a Masters of Education from Plymouth State University in 2012. She joined Woodstock Nursery School in 2017 as an individual aide and teaching associate.
Doria enjoys sharing the wonders of the natural world with students, having volunteered with the Four Winds Environmental Program for two years. She nurtures interests in art, design, knitting, cooking, skiing, hiking, paddling and pets in her free time.
